The 1% Law was introduced in Hungary in 1996. Each year, this law enables the 3.5 million taxpayers in Hungary to contribute to the activities of non-profit organisations – taxpayers can request the tax authorities to transfer 1% of their previous year’s paid income tax to help support the organisation of their choice without any loss to their income. The 1% option has the potential to unlock at least 9.4 billion HUF for Hungarian charities!

In 2008 around 28,000 organisations obtained support from taxpayers’ 1% contributions. As the majority of these organisations receive no direct funding from the state, the 1% facility is very important to them as it provides a large portion of their funding.

In the first quarter of each year, NIOK operates a free-phone information HELP-LINE (in Hungarian only) to assist taxpayers with any questions – the phone number is 06-80-200-074. NIOK campaigns to increase 1% giving to Hungarian charities, but does not accept 1% amounts for itself.
